Codex memory: how to make Codex remember past chats

Codex has its own memory, off by default. Here’s how to turn it on, and what SkyOS adds.

Updated 18 October 2026

In Codex

Codex memories stay on that computer, apart from ChatGPT’s memory, and update after a chat goes quiet. Source: Codex memories.

  1. Turn on Codex memories

    In the ChatGPT desktop app: Settings → Personalization → Enable Codex memories. Or in config.toml:

    [features]
      memories = true
  2. Choose per chat

    Type /memories to decide whether a chat uses memories and adds to them.

  3. Keep rules in AGENTS.md

    OpenAI calls memories a recall layer, not the place for rules that must always apply.

What SkyOS adds

The same notes in Codex, ChatGPT and Claude, on any computer. Say “continue” and a memory’s name to carry on work from ChatGPT or Claude.

It works on Codex’s free plan.

Free while in beta. No card needed.
