Why does ChatGPT forget things in long chats?
A chat can only hold so much at once. Here’s why early details slip, and how to keep them.

Know how much a chat holds
On the Free plan, ChatGPT takes in about 12 pages of your text at a time, and paid plans hold more. A longer chat no longer fits at once, so early details can be left out.
-
Repeat what matters
Paste the key numbers and decisions again, or ask for a summary and carry on in a new chat.
-
Save lasting facts to memory
Say “Remember that…” to keep a detail as a saved memory.
-
Keep long work in a project
Chats in the same project can draw on each other.
Or with SkyOS
SkyOS keeps each decision as its own exact, dated note, outside the chat. With the memory instructions on, ChatGPT reads the notes before it answers, so early decisions stay in view however long the chat gets.
SkyOS saves as you chat, so connect it before your next long one. It works on ChatGPT’s free plan too.
